Webb Lane was opened in 1914 at the outbreak of World War One to encourage local residents to Dig for Victory. They did and It worked to increase food security, reducing the amount of food Britain imported, freeing up ships to carry weapons and other war supplies. It increased morale, encouraging people to feel like they were part of the war effort and also promoted healthy eating to make people more productive.
The health benefits of gardening and growing, both physical and mental, are now officially acknowledged. There has also been a huge rise in young families wanting to grow their own organic produce. There are more families with young children on our site than ever before. We have recently had a newly built kitchen/toilet block with wheelchair access. The allotment has been hugely transformed and is now a real asset to the local community. We have won two awards for our work in the local community (in 2022 and in 2023). We have more projects in place for the future.

Everyone is welcome at Webb Lane and we cater to a wide range of our local community. There are over two hundred people who use or benefit from Webb Lane Community Allotment on a regular basis. That number rises to 350 when taking into account members of the local community who attend our events.
We run a shop where members can buy a wide range of gardening products (all organic) and we have recently widened our Membership to allow members of the local community to join as Associate Members (this is necessary as it is illegal to sell directly to the public). This allows them to purchase goods from the Community Shop. There are over thirty Associate Members at present.
We are pleased to have three groups which socially prescribe for people with various mental health issues:
We also have two School Groups; Banks Lane Infants and Pendlebury Centre and a Stockport Homes Communal Plot which engages SHG customers from Brinnington and Victoria Park. There is also (at present) a morning (Mondays) for Migrants from the Britannia Hotel (run by Seeding the Change).
We hold Events throughout the year Easter, Summer, Christmas primarily aimed at our local families who may be struggling. Due to kind sponsors and donations we are able to provide these events free of charge. These events are always very well attended and successful and are aimed at serving the local community, especially SHG tenants in the Victoria Park Flats and Maisonettes.
Webb Lane Community Allotment is supported by our Local Councillors, Stockport Homes/Stockport Local Fund, Stockport Public Health/ Debt Counselling, Wilmott Dixon, A and B Engineering, Morrisons, Sector 3 and Forever Manchester.
